Janaina had brunch with Ashley G. a while ago. We are both in love with her work. Whimsical art, that lets your imagination flow, letting you come up with your own story. 1. Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Ashley Goldberg. I'm 25 years old. I live in St. Louis,
Missouri with my boyfriend and creative partner in crime, Drew, our
cat, Isadora, and a ton of shipping and art supplies. When I'm not at
my apartment drawing or making things I can usually be found getting
coffee, dragging Drew to thrift stores, or telling myself I am going
to clean my apartment (right after this one last episode of the Wire
or whatever show we're currently watching on DVD).

2. What is your craft?

Mostly I draw, paint, and with the assistance of Drew, create prints
from my illustrations that we digitally color. That part is my job
(which I love) but if I had more free time there would be more
sewing, perhaps more knitting, but definitely more experimenting and
learning new crafts.

3. What inspires you?

I am hugely inspired by nature, the weather, and the time of year.
For me, nothing is more inspiring than an overcast fall day when the
leaves are changing and people are just beginning to bundle up. To
me, that time of year just feels creative. I am not inspired by a
hot, bright summer day. And even if nature isn't always present in my
work, it inspires me to get more done. When I can have all the
windows open and there is a breeze, or I can draw while I'm outside,
I get about 10 times more productive.

And of course magazines, vintage children's books, my own childhood
memories and fantasies of animals and creatures and talking houses.
Childhood camping trips and playing outside. And I love vintage
photographs. I like to research images from different times in
history. Lately it's been the 1930's and the dust bowl (you can thank
Carnivàle).

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?

I wish I had more advice to give, but what I can say: no matter what
you do, make the effort to just put it out there. If I waited to feel
like everything I was putting out there was perfect or exactly what I
was trying to say, I would be frozen and not do anything ever. Be
proactive.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?

Oh, that's such a hard question to answer. I have trouble liking
anything I do but I have a few limited edition prints that I've done
for an upcoming show and I feel pretty good about those.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?

Drawing, drawing, and more drawing and then carving creatures and
animals out of bars of soap. Sounds strange but it was really fun
even if they never really worked out.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?

I sell my work on Etsy (ashleyg.etsy.com), Velocity Art and Design
(www.velocityartanddesign.com), Artstream Gallery
(www.artstreamstudios.com), Shana Logic (www.shanalogic.com), and
other brick and mortar shops.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?

Ummm… thrifting, reading magazines, and poking around the internet at
design, art and craft blogs. Hanging out with my best friend. I would
love to travel now that I am self employed but really working and
creating things takes up most of my time.

9. What three words would describe you the best?

A bit neurotic :)

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?

I am really love everything Christopher Silas Neal does. Guh… his
work is amazing.

11. Anything else you would like to say?

No, that does not mean teenager boys with dodgy hair and aftershave playing in their parent's garage because they just found out they can get girls that way.

I listened to "Waiting" 42 times today, with the last one I found myself in a daze from their coolness and starting singing "sweaty armpits I lose my calm" instead of "sweaty palms I lose my calm" - niccee.

Today I had brunch with Mirjam and her gorgeous kids! She designs her own patterns and of course, creates all of her pieces. A while back I made a collection called flower girl with one of her dresses in it - I just can't get enough of them! Whether you're from the 70s or just 70s at heart, this shop is perfect for you! And we love that they are actually made out of vintage materials.

1. Tell us a little about yourself
I graduated ten years ago from Fashion School as a designer in Amsterdam. I've had my own small woman’s wear label for a few years and worked freelance in fashion.

I've always been interested in 3-dimensional, sculptural ways to construct clothing and experimented a lot with patterns and working with fabric right on the mannequin. My work used to be conceptual, minimalist, often asymmetrical and with details like folds and pleats, but was always quite wearable.

Now I do something totally different. I'm having fun making kids clothes out of my treasured collection of vintage fabrics, making pleasantly clashing combinations of patterns and using funny appliqués.

It was relieving to notice that when I could get rid of my mind when I was making things I became immensely productive and had so much more fun! It was like my brain had been in the way all the time.

2. What is your craft?
Both sewing and pattern making. Now that the design and fabrics are doing most of the work, I keep the shapes and silhouettes simple. And to think I hated sewing when I just graduated! I now can see all the endless seam ripping and trying again and again did lead to something. I enjoy it immensely to be able to make all the things that appear in my head.

3. What inspires you?
Right now it's the amazing fabrics I can get my hands on. I love making combinations, standing before my huge four-door closet, pulling out different pieces, and just let the ideas evolve. When I have a golden combo I make several different items in it, also because it can be hard to say goodbye to my work when it sells.

And to feed my head and have fun I try to find solutions for the restrictions in shape, size or condition that my fabrics usually have. Like I did with the seventies ovenmit in the 'warm hands pants'.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?
Ha! Well I'd say, make sure you use materials that you have unlimited access to, in case you'd like to have your work produced in series. (my problem right now :()

And, although these two things don't always go together well, I think and notice recycling is very hot. As it is becoming fashionable to 'buy and think green', I have a feeling it won't be long before there will be a big demand for items that help buyers express that they think and buy green! This is an area where we can still beat the bigger companies, because in our products it will be directly visible and not only on the label.

Another tip: For designers that feel they get a bit stuck in their routine, as we all do sometimes: Switch off your brain when you're making things from time to time and let coincidence or unforeseen circumstances be your set of boundaries to work with, just to have fun and see what you'll come up with. It will be like entering in your own contest, where you will win if you can surprise yourself!

5. What's your recent favorite item you've made?
My Swiss tea towel Cow dress. I found a super cute vintage swiss souvenir tea towel with Shepard’s bringing their cows up the hill along a winding road. It was nice and rare enough to frame. I combined it with two other fabrics and made a dress out of it. I wanted to keep it for my girl, but she preferred a variation I made of it, so I will list it in my shop soon...

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?
I was six and I was sewing a flat fabric structure from different scraps, symmetrical, like a tiny patterned rug or quilt. I remember my mom asking me why I didn’t make anything real. I guess she meant something 3 dimensional. When she had a good look she saw what I was doing and praised me for my creativity, which made me glow with pride.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling your work?
I have my simple but sufficient website where I sell my stuff here in Holland and I sell on Etsy, which I love! My customers are so sweet and enthusiastic it always gives me energy and inspiration to make new things.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?

Photography, relaxing with friends, vintage fabric hunting, going to Amsterdam, which I miss so much! And going on outings and picnics in the weekends with our kids in the 'bakfiets', a 'boxbike'.

9. What three words would describe you the best?
Creative, feminine, impulsive.

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?
Roshekie's dolls I found on Flickr, and Etsy shop too.

golden stars in the midnight collection

I've always loved mixing gold and silver together, it's such a nice contrast, but a lot of people are scared to do it, I've noticed. This outfit is a softer approach.

I've started with a lovely dress from the wonderful Seed Clothing; it has got a gorgeous grey metallic finish. Accessorize with a sparkly gold vintage clutch that has a gold chain so you can swing it around (weee!), gold/brass captures the pretty pinks in the lovely hairpiece, and of course, an oxidized silver anklet with gold balls gracefully jingling on it.

NOTE: anklet is actually a bracelet, but if you be a little creative, it can be used as an anklet (yay! two things in one!).

sunday brunch with Hiromi

most of us take baths, showers, or occasionally a sink/sponge wash-down. the fact that it is a mostly every day event we forget to take real pleasure in it. we rush through it, scrubbing, rinsing, scrubbing and sometimes brushing our teeth all at the same time, just to get it over, to move on to the grooming, combing, glitzing, and go.

Hiromi, also known to us as Soap or better Bathing in Luxury has dedicated herself to provide us with high-quality, decadent, bathing goods and a reason to slow things down a notch. slow things down enough to inhale the aromatic steam, to note the silkiness of soft skin, and to remind us that bathing isn't to be rushed, it is a time where we can pamper our over-exposed skin and our over-stressed minds.

1. Tell us a little about yourself

Hi, I'm Hiromi and live close to the Pacific Ocean. I'm one of those people you'd want
around if there were an emergency, especially as I can chat about
almost anything to distract you from any real problems. My formal
education is long and complicated and isn't directly related to crafting
or art.

2. What is your craft?

My passions are making high-quality bath and body products from scratch and painting in acrylics. Between the two, I manage to surround myself on a daily basis with pretty smells and
colors. Sometimes, that makes all the difference. I suffer a bit from "crafting ADD" so I usually have a google of projects going simultaneously (some for years, LOL) in addition to making bath and body goodies and painting.

3. What inspires you?

My brain. What ever grabs my fancy, seriously. It can be
anything, a glimpse of something, a phrase (NPR provides a lot of
creative fodder), a person, a place, a moment or feeling. I have an
open file in my brain tagged "remember this (sometimes) useless piece
of info" in which I file little blips from my life and THAT fuels my
creativity.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?

Pursue your own artistic vision, but if your goal is to
create a sustainable business, also try to be objectively realistic.
Never take comments personally but at the same time don't take abuse
from others. Realize building a clientèle base is a slow process that
requires a lot of work. Be nice to everyone (there isn't a reason not
to), try to be prompt in handling anything to do with sales or
promotions (appropriate communication is key) and keep in mind, a
person who is happy with you and your creations often refer you to
their friends and family. On a more specific level, I'd say sit down
and think about the image you are trying to project, come up with some
sort of semi-focussed branding plan, and invest in some well-designed
professional-looking business cards to hand out with your items or to
other people who might be interested in your items. Try to absorb the
world around you - every time you see something that appeals to you,
indie designer or not, ask yourself what it is that made you notice
and if you can apply a similar strategy to your own business. But
never copy people. That is bad - respect other people's property and
ideas.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?

My Dandelion's Dinner soap. With Spring here, I've been experimenting more with green, lighter scents. I wanted a soap salad with notes of watercress, cucumber and carrots atop fresh
leafy greens and a consistent visual presentation. Dandelion is a character from Watership Down, a book I loved as a kid. The name is inspired by the snarks about salads being bunny food. That's OK, the people who used to say that to me probably have cardiac issues or
constipation.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?

I think I crocheted a scarf with my aunt's help when I was 5 or 6. I'm
sure I made other things before then
but that's when my crafting took hold because I remember thinking I
could actually design and plan projects. My creative mind went wild
from there.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?

I started selling my creations online to pay for
supplies when I was traveling a lot and splitting time between two
countries (long story) a few years ago. It worked out perfectly - I
could create to my heart's content, share with people and not
accumulate "stuff" which is my tendency. Around the time I was
debating whether to re-enter the "real employment" world, I realized I
might be able to make a full-time living doing this and here I am now.
I am selling my ever-expanding line of bath & body products at
http://www.bathinginluxury.com which currently points to my etsy store
(my id there is "soap"). My creations can be
found in boutiques, specialty shops and at least one spa. I plan on
expanding my wholesale accounts in b&m stores, especially locally
where there is popular support for indie creations.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?

I love being outdoors and doing outdoorsy things. I like plants and
flowers, even though I am allergic to a lot. I'm an info-junkie and also
volunteer occasionally with NPOs and local groups.

9. What three words would describe you the best?

Funny. Self-entertaining. Chatty/Solitary. I oscillate between
the 2.

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?

I am on a perpetual search for the PERFECT BAG. I've been eying the
custom messenger bags from r.e.load baggage inc
(http://reloadbags.com/bags/ops.php) and have been kicking myself for
not buying the squid messenger bag from this local designer and he's
not taking new orders right now - http://zugsterbags.com. I hope to
be checking out this local jewelry designer
http://www.kmaleydesign.com/ some time soon. I also am perpetually
crushed on the local artists and try to check them out at open studios
which will be this week.

Today I was lucky enough to have brunch with Tara M., a Canadian designer in North Korea. Her work is delicate and refined, with organic goodness in there too, and photography I probably would have up on my walls. You guys are in for a treat!

1. Tell us a little about yourself

Well, I'm a fairly serious person, so beware, because this interview may be hideously boring!

I grew up in a small town in Northern Ontario, Canada. I *love* nature and animals. I have a weird obsession for creating personalities for my pets and I like to make them have conversations with each other, my guests… and even me when I’m bored. Yes, I’m a little weird. I’m not afraid to admit that!

Right now I’m living in South Korea, teaching English and making lovely earth-inspired baubles.

2. What is your craft?

My craft… hmmm… That’s hard to pin down exactly. I started out sewing, then I switched to making jewelry, then I started doing fabric art… Currently I’m mostly working on making decadent, nature-inspired jewelry.

3. What inspires you?

Nature. Sounds cheesy, but the beauty of the natural world inspires me all the time. I look outside and I can’t believe that nature produces such rich, sensuous, things. When I buy stones, I’m struck with awe at the fact that they were dug out of some cave, from deep within the belly of the earth. I just stare at them and think how lucky I am that I get to touch them and transform them into a work of art. Nature has so many beautiful things to offer us, and I try to capture that in my work.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?

1) Go with your gut.

2) Don’t be committed to any one thing in terms of your designs or products.

3) Evolve as an artist and producer. I know so many artists who flounder after a few years of success because they never change their style or palette to match current trends.

4) Evolve as a person. Growing as a person and enriching yourself will enrich your work. Enrichment will make your work more complex and interesting.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?

How recently? Well, I make a lot of beautiful jewelry. But my favorite things to make are my fibre art pieces. I have been working on a series of portraits made out of felted wool. The portraits are all of women seen nude from the waist up.

I really like making these felted pieces because the women are all a reflection of my experiences. It’s always a surprise how they will turn out, what expression they will wear, how they will look, what experience sits inside them.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?

Oh god! I love this story. I come from a family of sewers, and so I knew how to sew from about 6 or 7 years old. I made a turtle out of an old skirt of mine. The turtle was black, with white polka dots. I sewed the turtle with the seams out. I was so embarrassed because I screwed up with the seams and I threw the turtle out. Now, I really wish I had saved it. If I had that turtle today, it would be my most prized possession.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?

Right now, I am only selling my work on Etsy, because I’m halfway across the world in Korea. I would love to sell elsewhere, but it would be so hard to peddle my work from here.

I decided to start selling my work on Etsy because I had a load of gorgeous jewelry piling up. I actually planned not to do any art when I came to teach in Korea. I wanted to take a break. But after six months of hiatus, I started getting the creative itch. So what started out as a hobby, has turned into a very small business, and I hope it will bloom into a sustainable business when I get back to Canada.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?

I enjoy watching stormy weather. I enjoy eating pizza. It’s my favorite food! I love hanging out with my boyfriend. I also love staring at beads. Seriously. I’ll just sit and stare at beads. I don’t move them, I don’t touch them, I just stare at them.

9. What three words would describe you the best?

Intelligent, interesting, interested.

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?

The force behind the creations on www.bonspielcreation.etsy.com. I ordered some things from her, and her work inspired me to start creating again.

11. Anything else you would like to say?

Everyone has been so supportive of my work and my future plans, so all I want to say is: Thank you!

I just love the contrast, but it is probably a miss from me. Maybe if it was a longer jumper, a different coloured belt, chocolate brown tights, and different shoes. Do you smell a chicken? :P

the ladies behind the brand new brooklyn indie market which debuts May 5, 2007 have sweetly agreed to a little interview. i am very excited about their new market and i really hope it inspires others to organize and participate in venues such as this. let's all support the indie design world!

1a. Tell us a little about yourselves?

KM: Embracing new wave in a redneck high school wasn't easy, at 15 I got my first paycheck and ran straight out to buy a pair of 1950's style red pumps. I went to FIT, learned millinery, wardrobing, wig-making and now I like to boss people around so I am organizing fairs,markets,festivals for designers and crafters.

JR: I learned to sew and do other crafts at a young age. I've always had the hobby but ended up focusing on business, I wanted my own store. I think of myself more as an entrepreneur than a designer.

1b. How did you both meet and then decide to start your business together?

KM: Johanna and I met through the wonders of the ether net, out of all the many correspondences I have she shone through as someone with moxie, chutspah (sp?) and she made me laugh. She is a miracle worker and I like miracles!

JR: I had just started Daisyhead and heard about Kathy running a designer fair at the Old Stone House. I went to do some networking and introduce myself. We discovered that she lives across the street from my old apartment AND I'm living down the street from her old apartment. I decided we must have been meant to meet at some point. I live 3 blocks from Smith & Union and the first thing we talked about was "why is nobody selling from this location?" We became friends and did some smaller scale fairs together while batting the idea around.

2. What is your craft?

KM: I am the skirt fairy www.fofolle.com

JR: I make tees and onesies for babies and kids with funny 80s tunes on them, also some handmade kids clothing.

3. What inspires you?

KM: I am inspired by tapping into my flirty side and tapping into other flirty designers

JR: Actually, Kathy inspires me! I admire her determination and persistence.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?

KM: Stick to your guns, meet other indies, organize events, have fun, pitch in, reach out, join, have a rich boy/girl friend/parents. What the heck, there is no such thing as job security!

JR: Yes! Persistence! Don't give up, meet as many like-minded people as you can and keep doing what you love.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?

KM: I made envelopes out of all of my empty coffee bean packages, I felt so guilty about them, but now they are useful again.

JR: I've been working on flower inspired hemlines and made an adorable child's skirt that really drapes like rose petals.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?

KM: I remember making shoes out of newspaper at the age of three. Maybe I should have been a shoe designer?

JR: My Mom used to take me shopping for those See & Sew patterns. I think the first we made together was a t-shirt dress.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?

KM: I sell at a lovely boutique called Ai Ai Gasa in Park Slope, Brooklyn. I do a special label for Flirt in Park Slope, Brooklyn too. I have supporters in the neighborhood and select street fairs, etsy and of course my own events. I started 5 years ago, first with kids clothing but then for their mommies.

JR: For me, early 2006. I left a corporate job to start my own business. I have my website www.daisyhead-designs.com, our BIM site www.brooklynindiemarket.com and of course we heart Etsy!

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy

KM: Watching my son grow up, looking at my hot boyfriend.

JR: I'm a bit OCD so anything of an organizational nature that turns chaos to order. I love to re-purpose found items and I enjoy doing some of the HTML for our website.

9. What three words would describe you the best?

KM: loopy, determined, blond

JR: Organized, creative and (hopefully) kind.

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?

KM: feral childe, smooch!

JR: I'm a big fan of Kathlin Argiro. I just ordered five dresses from her.

so, lately i haven't been feeling too pretty. it's getting hot in the desert, which means hot wind blowing in my face forcing tiny desert particles into my shallow wrinkles making them look much worse than what they already do.

Me & My Craft

Stamp Jewelry is me - Clare Stoker-Ring! I currently live in Brooklyn, NY in a teeny, tiny apartment that I share with my writer husband, two cats, a smelly blind dog and a growing collection of ominous looking tools that I use to design and fabricate jewelry.

I am a computer programmer by trade and Stamp jewelry started as a way to decompress.

Making jewelry and programming are actually very similar – both have well defined, often limiting, parameters and you have to find creative ways to manipulate the materials (or code) to get the desired result. Both are challenging, often time consuming and frustrating processes, but nothing comes close to the “wow look what I made happen!” feeling I get when I’m looking at a finished product (even though I’m often not quite sure how I made it happen!).

Then & Now

I have been doing this for almost 3 years and I still find it surprising that I am doing something so creative. As a child I always had my nose in a book, as a teenager I was a sneering Goth, and as an adult I have always worked in a high-stress corporate position. I don’t have any vivid memories of making anything by hand, though my mother is a multi-talented crafter and my grandfather was a carpenter.

My latest piece is my Starburst Riveted Ring. Riveting proved to be quite a challenge for me and this design was also the first time I plucked up the courage to hammer my metal - previously I was careful to keep it shiny and dent free. Texturing has provided a new outlet for my imagination, and I am really excited to see what’s next.

When & Where

I started selling soon after I started making jewelry. I gave a pair of earrings to a friend, she wore them to work and everyone loved them. She said if I made more, she would sell them to her colleagues. She sold 28 pairs in a day and she and my husband encouraged me to start selling my work elsewhere. Of course I thought I’d sell 28 pairs of earrings every day, and of course I didn’t!

My work is currently only available through http://stamp.etsy.com. Selling is a full time job in itself and I love that Etsy provides a venue in which I can both sell my work and build my skills and business knowledge. Something that wouldn’t be possible in any other commercial venue.

What’s Left Over

When I’m not creating jewelry or writing code I can be found eating delicious food and drinking cocktails with my husband, without whose encouragement and support I would be drinking more cocktails and designing less jewelry.

I am a member of the EtsyMetal street team (http://www.etsymetal.com), a group of artists whose talent and skills are inspiring me to push my technical and artistic boundaries.

My advice to anyone interested in making and selling their art is to always wear safety glasses, pay attention to the details, and find a group of people who both support and challenge you.

i am especially smitten with supastarr, not only because of her incredible designs and raw talent. i am smitten with her because she is extremely kind.

not long ago, i was teaching myself how to screen print - i must say that my first attempts were far clear of anything quality. i became so desperate for help, i turned to the etsy forums. there i was greeted with mostly positive responses - the one that stood out most though was from supastarr.

she explained to me how to get a good print in terms that made sense and it helped immensely. one reason why etsy is so charming is that people, like supastarr, roam its long and sometimes dim hallways, always there to listen and teach....

so, i thank you supastarr, for helping me not throw my screens away and most of all for being a killer printer and seller on etsy. you totally are a supa star.

1. Tell us a little about yourself

My name is Brooke Medlin, and I live in Ohio with two turtles and an
ever-growing stash of craft supplies. I'm a metalsmith by trade, but am
currently having an affair with my Gocco screenprinting press.

2. What is your craft?

Metal wrangler. Color combiner. Paper printer.

3. What inspires you?

I...have no idea! It's sort of an osmosis -everything I see, hear, do - I just absorb it and it comes out in metal form. One thing I CAN pinpoint as being inspirational to me was a
passage from Lynn Truss's book 'Eats, Shoots, and Leaves'. It talks
about the word 'lacunae', and what it means. It's a latin word, and it
means a gap in text. It's also come to refer to those lovely curly
brackets that I've never quite figure out the proper word for. That
shape was what I was trying to acheive with one of my recent pieces,
the Lacunae Necklace.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?

PROMOTE YOURSELF. You need a blog, a flickr page, a website. I know, it sounds
like a lot, but by linking all of these things together, you're able to
really promote yourself. Interest builds - it starts out slow, but if
you keep at it, it will work. Promise.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?

I love my Relic Necklace, which is a limited edition piece, and only for sale in
my Mintd store. I also love my Wrecking Ball Earrings, also avaiable on
Mintd. Really, I am very proud of my newest collection, FuturePerfect.
It's the first collection that I've really been inspired to make. I
generally just make whatever comes to me, and don't do cohesive
'lines'. This collection is the first that really came to me
altogether, and has a story behind it. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I
just bought a Gocco, and have made my first in what will probably be a
ridiculous amount of paper goods with my new favorite crafty toy. I am
absolutely enamored with it, and the possiblities it's opened up - I
can make gift tages! I can print on my little gift boxes! Notecards!
It's all very exciting.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?

I made maps of my neighborhood a lot. I made audiotapes when I was very small of
myself reading stories to imaginary people, playing 'guess the sound'
games, and things like that. the first thing I remember making and
selling, besides lemonade, were these little baskets in which I'd
arranged small pine branches, pine cones, and the little orange
berries. They proudly decorated many an end table among my parents'
circle of friends.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?

Right now I'm selling on several websites, and each of these has items
that are exclusive to that shop only. Imogene.org, wexarts.org (check
the 'shop' link to find my work), and I'm excited to be selling on the
brand new offshoot of the Modish blog, Modishoppe.com. Look for the Mum
Earrings exclusively on Modish! I'm also excited to be debuting my
FuturePerfect collection in my mintd shop. You'll find a few of the
items from this collection elsewhere, but the entire collection is
available only on Mintd. Last, but not least, my etsy shop. Here you
can find the largest range of my work, as well as many past items that
are available for special order. I sold my first 'real' piece of
jewelry when I was 18, living in Chicago, to a bead store where I'd
likely bought all the components to make the piece. I didn't pick up
the craft again until I was 21 and back in Ohio, and sold my first
pieces about 6 months after I began making them. I still sell my work
to the very first shop that bought from me.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?

I love taking photos. It's an offshoot of having to take photos of my work - now I
love photography as a hobby, instead of just a means to an end. It's
neat to be able to look at the world and see 'snapshots' in your mind.
I also do yoga, and am hoping to become more diligent and better at it
over this coming summer, when business usually slows down a bit. But,
really, I'm always 'creating' something, even when I'm not in my
studio. There's always somethin' brewing...

9. What three words would describe you the best?
funny tallish solitary

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?

Melissa shoes. They started small and have gotten and the company has really grown, it's
wonderful. I own three pairs rom their current line and I am NOT a shoe
person. Well. I'm a SEASONAL shoe person. Winter shoes have to be
functional, so there's a dry spell in my shopping habits during those
months. Summer shoes can be anything! So I do tend to buy a few more
pairs than is strictly necessary. Melissa has teamed up with some great
designers this year, AND they make their shoes from over 90% recycled
materials - even the water in their production plant is recycled. That
makes me happy. I'm also completely in love with Built by Wendy, and
envision myself pairing her nautical-theme current collection with more
'downtown' pieces and looking fabulous. Ha!

i turned on my computer this morning and was looking at my flickr, then at my contacts' flickr and i saw anna laura's newest original artwork, I'm in Heaven with Tony Tight Black Denim. my day brightened in an instant. tony is delicious in his tight black denims. you can find him in her etsy shop.

i walk down the path with my eyes closed, feeling the tall grass brush against my legs, and the warm breeze kissing my cheek. i can hear the crescendo of the birds' chirping, their songs that collide and then connect and finally conclude with a thousand fluttering wings only to congregate on another tree, a different limb to begin their song anew.

i know where i am going, i have been there before. a place where my imagination no longer resides within my mind, it exists amongst the trees, the moss, the creek, the smell of this world around me. when i arrive there i will open my eyes, breathe, and take in all that surrounds me.

when i leave, the air will be moist, the day will be dying, the birds will have hushed, my fingers will be muddy with ink, but i will have captured my moment, my story, my song. i will walk back with my eyes open, feeling the tall grass brush against legs...

liz shuman's photography captivated me the moment i stumbled upon her etsy shop. there was a hint of a secret world, a magical place, a thoughtfulness that immediately filled me with curiosity and a desire to understand its sweet simplicity even more.

i hope you all enjoy the discovery of this girl and her camera...

1. Tell us a little about yourself

Well, I hate to disappoint but there's really not too much to tell! I'm a twenty-something living in Boston (born and raised) with my man and our cat in a cute, read: small, apartment. When I have to fill out the "Bio" section of whatever website I'm signing up for on any given day, I tend to say something like; "I'm a social worker and waitress by trade, but photographer at heart". Currently, during the day, I work for a small non-profit organization doing casework and a couple nights a week I wait tables at a Cambodian-French restaurant. I was recently accepted to Simmons College School for Social Work and come September I'll be working my way towards an MSW (Master of Social Work).

2. What is your craft?

Photography, I don't claim to really know what I'm doing but I love every second of it. I even remember the first picture I took with my little, blue Fisher-Price camera when I was around 4 years old; the subjects were my two little stuffed animal cats "Itsy" and "Bitsy".

3. What inspires you?

Beautiful, ordinary, every day life. I have a hard time describing my "style", but the one thing I know for sure is that my photography gives you a peek into the way I see the world. I take pleasure in finding beauty in the forgotten, the discarded, the mundane and I try to portray that in my photos. I'm constantly inspired by the photographers, artists, crafters and bloggers I come across on the web... there's so much talent out there it's really amazing. Also lately, treetops have really been getting me. I've taken a few pictures of the tops of trees with my digital camera but favor the ones I've taken with my various Polaroids. Although I'm seriously anxious for Spring to arrive and stay, the bare limbs of the trees just look so perfect right about now.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?

Keep on keepin' on. Always trust your gut and share your art with the world. My grandmother, who is a painter, gave me a great piece of advice when I was trying to choose one of my photos to give as a present. She told me to choose one that I especially like, because then the other person will like it too. Although this might not be 100% certain, it's a good exercise in confidence. An artist should always be confident in her art.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?

Hmm... I think that'd have to be The Paper Crane Project. I've always loved origami and about two months ago I re-learned how to fold Japanese cranes. I found the act of folding very soothing and while I was waiting for grad school decisions to come in, I made a lot of cranes. My man was getting sick of them cluttering up our "cute" apartment so I decided to send them out to friends and contacts I've made on flickr. As I was getting emails with mailing addresses, I was formulating a plan... I decided I would send 1000 cranes to 1000 people. In return I would ask that each individual take a picture of his or her crane then send it to me either in the mail or as an attachment in an email. Once I receive all the pictures I'll make some sort of installation, though I'm nowhere near that stage in the game yet! It was a crazy idea and if not for the unbelievably positive feedback I am receiving, I probably would have already thrown in the towel.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?

Oh boy... I'm not quite sure, although gluing Cheerios to a drawing on construction paper comes to mind.

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?

I sell a selection of prints and giftcards on Etsy, although my shop is in need of a major overhaul. I've done one craft show which was a great experience, but not really my scene... which is not to say that I wouldn't do it again, it would just have to be a really enticing offer.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?

The great outdoors, as soon as the campgrounds open up the man and I are camping whenever and wherever. We especially like State and National Park campgrounds, they offer cheap rates and minimalistic surroundings. I also like Yoga, though I don't do it nearly as much as I should, specifically Kundalini Yoga which incorporates a strong spiritual aspect with chanting. The chanting part was a little off-putting at first, but once I got the hang of it I felt much less silly.

9. What three words would describe you the best?

Impulsive, Candid, Excitable

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?

Oh I have SO many. Lisa Congdon is gearing up for a show in New York entitled "Anatomie", every piece she's leaked so far I've fallen completely head over heals for. Also, Jen Garrido makes some of the most beautiful art I've seen and boldsimple is one of my most favorite jewelry designers around.

11. Anything else you would like to say?

my secret crush....modern front

as an architectural designer & having worked as an interior designer, i am easily turned on by unique application, quality design, and color. there are other various things that play into the "senses peeked" calculation but those mentioned above are the front runners.

a while back i was finger strolling through etsy and came across modern front, i instantly fell in love, pretty hard. i stalk their store, daily (most of the time) just to make me smile and it acts as a reminder, that yes, there still are a million amazing things to discover in the world of design.

modern front is taking the art of re-purposed goods to a height that i dream of. taking vintage goods, repairing them, and then coating them with soft skinned rubber which can be used indoors as well as outdoors. how sensational is that?

so, my crush for the everlasting moment has got to be modern front, thank you for the multi-use, re-purposed goods.

Shoutout - Pamela Tang

The other day I found the most gorgeous designer on Etsy! Her name is Pamela Tang, she is an interior designer in Singapore. She makes the most gorgeous quilt covers, cushions, and book/journal covers, that will make any book look beautiful! They are handcrafted from exquisite dupion silk, and she also works with other natural materials.

You can tell just by the photos that they have been made with wonderful craftsmanship.

Time to bring out our fancy China wear, because we're going to have brunch with Amy E., who is a designer in Alberta, Canada, and she goes by the name Code Lime (but you may know her as Sweet Loveable Goods!).

Do you remember your Grandma, or perhaps mum wearing knitted or crocheted Mary Janes? She sells many gorgeous things, but one of my favorites would have to be her Mary Jane slippers. They have a real vintage appeal, but they are also really modern and rocky. Our feet shall be pleased, because they are super comfy and warm.

So let us sip our tea, and learn more about Amy...

1. Tell us a little about yourself
I am 24 years old.

2. What is your craft?
My craft is a little bit of everything. I thrive on learning new things and am constantly at the library or buying new books to teach myself whatever I can get my hands on. I am currently taking a dress makers course as well. I want to try it all just to say I tried. I've learned that I am not a jewelry maker, painter or Martha Stewart. I am however a crocheter, book binder, printer (gocco and silkscreen) button maker and mess maker!

3. What inspires you?
Many things inspire me, but I've found I am more inspired when I am at peace. When Im not concentrating on what to make next or thinking about the things I want to make is usually when an idea pops into my head. I love the patterns of scrapbook paper and fabrics. I could stare at paper and fabric for days. I am a visual person I have to sketch things out before I can really see it.

4. Do you have any advice to give to other indie designers?
My only advice is to make what you love if it feels like a job or a chore you may as well get a job working for someone else. When you are happy it shows in your work, a person in love can create such romantic things and you can feel the love. If you are having a bad day, take the day off. Don't let it out in your creations or you will see that piece and forever remember that bad day. How can you sell something to a person when you yourself don't enjoy the item.

5. What is your favorite thing that you have created recently?
A princess skirt for my daughter. Its so far from perfect, but its 4 layers of fabric and tulle and she loves it. I made it in about 20 minutes just so she could wear it before bedtime and she wouldn't take it off. She doesn't care if the layers are even or if the waist is a little bulky she just feels like a princess in it and that's all that matters.

6. What is the first thing you can remember making by hand?
I remember digging toilet paper rolls out of the garbage because you could make telescopes and megaphones with them. In kindergarten I was a painter, I still have some of the paintings and I can still tell you what they are supposed to be!

7. Where do you sell and when did you decide to start selling you work?
Right now I sell mainly on Etsy. I have some mirrors at Bella in Alaska and some on their way to Six One Six in Australia. I hope to have my site Code Lime up and running by mid April at the latest. I started selling my work when I started making my Mary Jane slippers. It took me 3 weeks and about 6 no good slippers to come up with a pattern that I was happy with and my sister immediately wanted a pair. The first pair went to my mom. People started seeing the slippers and wanted some of their own, that was almost 2 years ago.

8. Apart from creating things, what else do you enjoy?
Playing with my 2 year old and my husband, spring and fall, trees and snack food!

9. What three words would describe you the best?
Mother, wife, maid... haha, they really do, but for real I'd say Happy, jumpy, and loud!

10. What/Who is your latest indie crush/designer?
I'm currently coveting Tree house 28

nothing builds up lover nostalgia better than shopping for that particularly special guy. And, better yet, nothing beats having a bit of control over what he wears.

though most of the time, i am personally beat by my guy's style. he tends to get things right, i on the other have had some dips in road. but i think with women's styles that may be a common hazard b/c our clothing tends to be a roller coaster ride. styles change as often as my elementary school boyfriends did and that leads to some pretty poor decision making.

men's clothing on the other hand tends to glide by pretty smoothly (as we celebrate the 12th birthday of the cargo short), like going around in circles at the local roller skating rink, as old 80's tunes run on loop. it gets a bit boring sometimes.

luckily things are changing. men are starting to take risks in their monotonous wardrobe, adding flashes of color and bold design. men's fashion is attempting to catch up and i have decided to pay tribute to all the men in our lives.

yes, yes, just when you thought that mingling hangover had finally disappeared and those irritating flickers of words or actions you may or may not have said or done have finally settled semi-quietly into a murmur of "oh, that probably didn't happen"

i haven't come to ruffle & fluff those feathers of embarrassing memories or rekindle the grueling morning after visits to the porcelain god. i have come with an offering of the most fashionable kind.

the kind of offering that whisks away any remaining sensitivities to light, quiets that constant companion, thumper the rabbit, thumping away in your head, and settles that slight nausea that occasionally sweeps over your recovering body every time you see the pointer finger and thumb closing in on each other, you automatically scream inside, "no, no i have on green, see right here," as you search your being for something that resembles green. you find something, yes, you have found green, but it isn't your traditional st. patty's day green, it's a bruise. a bruise that proves you were not prepared for last saturday's festivities, a bruise that has turned a very uninteresting shade of greenish-yellow.

this blog was created not only to invigorate our fashion minds but also to offer a wonderful view into the indie design world.

finding the perfect outfit isn’t usually that simple. finding that flawless get-up for a specific occasion can be even more mind boggling. we are here to help.

cash and time are both issues a majority of us deal with. we hope to bring a fresh perspective on ways to avoid wasting your whole paycheck on a killer outfit. we can help you to supplement the wardrobe you already have.

you’ll see collections that include things from old navy, payless, macy’s, and many more big-box departments stores, items that are already in most people’s closets. you’ll also find items that you would never find in those department stores. that is what makes indie design so special: short runs, "one of a kind", varying patterns, love and attention. this is the essence of indie.

you won’t be seeing your twin on your next run to your favorite coffee spot. you may see the same jeans, but not the top, the jacket, or earings, maybe not even your shoes. people will ask, “where did you get that fabulous bangle bracelet?” and you can honestly say, “oh, this? this is one of kind, you can’t find it anywhere else. sorry…” smile, pivot turn, and feel good knowing that not only are you supporting independent designers, you are also breaking free from the monotony of the shopping mall.

we’re not trying to make you commit to changing what is already working for you. we would like to pepper your existing wardrobe with some spicy finds from indie designers world-wide.

there are a ton of great indie shopping venues. we are here to sift through them and find the winning pieces. don’t think that it will just be clothes…no, no…we will be spotlighting everything but the kitchen sink! from gourmet dog treats to decadent homemade espresso brownies to found art, and so much more. not one stone will go unturned on our quest to fill your eyes with a delicious taste of well done crafty creations.

pull up a comfy chair, grab a biscotti and a cup of tea and enjoy the fantastic collections that will unfold in front of your eyes.

every wednesday we will be offering a closer look into the collections we will be creating. each designer will be interviewed, so you can learn more about them, and the curator of the collection will explain the inspiration for their masterpiece.
